Redefining ‘Skate’ Art with ADX

Art Design Xchange (ADX) held their seventh annual Summer Skate Deck Show, featuring over 230 works. Unlike traditional deck shows, ADX takes an alternate route and transforms the skateboards into works of art rather than serve as a canvas. In addition to artworks painted on boards, some have taken a sculptural route.

Located on SE 11th and Oak, ADX is a creative hub for artists to display works and work on projects. It was found by Kelley Roy in 2011. After hosting multiple art shows, the people at ADX learned that having a common canvas with different artists’ interpretations works well. “We found that skateboards really translated well for people,” Syd, community manager and curator of ADX, said. “There just is this really tightly woven relationship between creativity and skateboarding, both the sport and activity is very creative and artistic.”

As interest for the deck show grew annually, the community grew too. “We are providing a setting for the community to come together and have a shared appreciation for each other’s work,” Syd said. The community aspect of the show is evident when looking at the featured artists. Local organizations and skateparks like Stronger, Commonwealth, Skate Like a Girl, and Portland All Wheels Welcome had boards on display. ADX and Stronger also held a free skate clinic for people wanting to learn how to skate.

“We’ve had people all over the west coast from Seattle to San Diego participate in this show,” Syd, community manager and curator of ADX, said. “I also do see a lot of tattoo artists, nail artists, and then, of course, skaters.” The show is an open invite for anyone to participate. Isla Roho is the youngest artist featured at just 10 years old.

“Anybody that wants to be in the show is welcome to participate,” Syd said. “There’s no jury or selection process.” Open calls for the show are released in the winter. After paying an application fee, artists have creative reign to manipulate their boards. The only rule being that artists keep the truck holes for hanging.
