‘Various’ Show at One Moto Cafe
The Merriam-Webster defines “artist” as “a person who creates art (such as painting, sculpture, music, or writing) using conscious skill and creative imagination.” Although skateboarding is not painting, sculpture, music, or writing, it is certainly a performative art done through “conscious skill and creative imagination.” Skaters express their perspective of the world through their lens via spot selection. Once they’ve chosen their spot (canvas), they choose what trick (medium) to do, placing heavy emphasis on form through their style.
Some skaters are artists in a literal sense—they paint, photograph, draw, sculpt, etc. One Moto Cafe, located right by Willis Kimbel’s Rip’s Skate Shop, hosted an art show titled Various, displaying works from various skaters in Portland, Oregon. Some of the featured artists were Sebo Walker, Noah Smith, James Alby, Chet Childress, Joe Brook, and Tyler Bledsoe.
While people gathered to congratulate the artists with their drinks and hang out with their friends, a projector was premiering a trailer for an upcoming documentary featuring James Alby. The documentary highlights James’ pottery alongside his skating.
Congratulations to everyone involved in the art show, and thank you to One Moto Cafe for hosting!
